Detox Programs

Your liver, kidneys, gut and skin clear what your body does not need every hour of the day. A supervised detox program is about giving those systems what they need to do that job well, and finding out whether something specific is getting in the way.

Starting with your history, not a product

A program here begins the same way every visit does: a longer history than usual. What you eat and drink, the medicines and supplements you already take, your work and home environment, your sleep, and when you started to feel the way you do now. Fatigue, brain fog, headaches and digestive trouble have many causes, and several of them are better treated directly than with a cleanse.

Where testing will change the plan, it is ordered: liver and kidney function, blood counts, thyroid, blood sugar, vitamin and mineral levels, and heavy metal testing when your history points to an exposure.

What a program involves

The practice offers a number of detox programs, from liver support through to programs aimed at heavy metals. Which one is right, if any, depends on what the history and testing show. Most combine a structured eating plan, professional-grade nutritional support chosen for you, attention to hydration, sleep and regular movement, and a follow-up visit to see what changed.

Dr. Gisi's stated preference is to try nutritional support first where that is reasonable. The same test applies here as to any other treatment: is there reason to think it works, what does it cost you, and what are the risks.

Who should talk to the doctor first

Do not start a detox program on your own if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney or liver disease, diabetes, a history of an eating disorder, or take prescription medicines, particularly blood thinners, seizure, thyroid or heart medicines. Some cleanse products change how medicines are absorbed. Bring everything you take to your visit.

What this is not

It is not a fast, a colon cleanse or a substitute for treating a diagnosed condition. If testing finds a problem that needs medication or a specialist, you will be told that clearly and referred.

What to expect at your visit

  • A full history, including diet, environment, medicines and supplements
  • Examination and review of any recent laboratory results
  • Testing only where the result will change the plan
  • A written program with an eating plan and any recommended nutritional support
  • A follow-up visit to review how you feel and repeat testing if it was abnormal

Common questions

Do I need a detox program?
Many people do not. Your body clears most of what it needs to without help. A program is worth discussing when symptoms have no other explanation, when testing shows a specific problem, or when you want supervised help changing how you eat and live.
How long does a program last?
It depends on the program and on you. The office will explain the length, the follow-up schedule and the cost before you start.
Is it covered by insurance?
The office visit and medically necessary laboratory testing are billed to insurance as usual. Nutritional products are not covered by insurance. Ask the office for current pricing.
